Fighting For Life

When you were a kid, did you ever listen to adults talk about how they would most like to die? I remember hearing over and over that my grandparents, aunts, and uncles would like to “die in my sleep.” Nobody talked about wanting to be rushed to the hospital where they might have IV’s, breathing tubes, feeding tubes, and other equipment hooked up to them. Nobody wanted a parade of strangers coming in at all hours checking this, that, and the other. My family members wanted to close their eyes and peacefully slip away.

Today people generally live longer. Not only that, they’re expected to want to live longer, to “fight cancer” or other life-limiting conditions. How often have you heard about someone losing their battle with illness? What ever happened to enjoying life, to living to your fullest even while knowing that death so the natural end for all of us? Who decided that so many people have to go out losers, that their diseases were the winners?

Live well now. Whether you’re healthy or not, rich or poor, value this moment. What can you savor about now? How can you be at peace? That’s what life’s about. That’s what death can be about, too.
