Who Cares?

I was a hospice social worker for several years, and before that I was a chaplain on call at a busy trauma center. I’ve met my share of people who can’t take care of themselves, and I’ve met the people who care for them. Sometimes family is great at caregiving, sometimes it’s best to hire someone outside the family. I know my mother gets better care in her retirement community than I would be able to provide her in my own home.

What happens when the majority of the population is not able to provide care for the elderly? What happens when the elderly people are the majority? Reports tell us that as boomers age there will be an increasing shortage of caregivers for them. What are your ideas for how best to care for those who need help?
